🧭 From the Foreword

Foreword

Eclesiastes 2.4-6:

We have done great things, I have built houses, I planted vineyards; I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted in them all kinds of fruit trees. I've done the pond to water the grove, where the trees are growing.

I begin with the thoughts of Solomon, the wisest and the richest man, who did what he wanted, he had everything what his heart wanted and finally arrived at the sad meditation, but true. Then, when I've had the opportunity to watch the account all the work that I had done with my own hands, and to work what I had done, I saw that all was vanity and a chase after wind, and there's nothing more durable under the sun (verse 11)

This paper is a collection of original images, and the fragments of the memories that I lived in the Golden State of California, 15 years ago. There are more than 600 photographs, sketches, and projects I've had the courage to dream of, and at the end, I put them into practice. Some dreams were too high, and they didn't have my expectation. Others have exceeded my standards, and they have given me a run and hope that it's all in the past.

I was a dreamer, an artist, an engineer, and I have tried everything possible to create a little slice of heaven on earth, and utopia, which in the same way, remained in my dreams. I had a lot of history, brought all the way from Transylvania, where I lived for 9 years. And that's where I have had a lot of dreams of greatness. I've got an old house, a fortress, with 1-meter-thick walls of stone with the gate on the street, so nobody saw anything inside. At the rear it was a yard with a canopy of vine grapes, a huge fir tree, a fountain with a wheel and a wood barn. In the back, the hill with the trees (orchard), where the bear did come from, to eat the fruits in the night. The path through the orchard was toward the forest, below the 700 years old fortress of Michelsberg. I've struggled with the shortcomings of the communist era and with the hardships of the winter, with heavy frost, the indifference of the local Germans, cold and dark, and with the envy and loathing of the communists, who were staring at me from the top. I have managed to have a house like in the stories, a castle, rebuilt after my taste, with all my strengths as artist and engineer.

I have restarted the history of the past and dream, after dream, I slowly put it into practice with the help of my boys Eddie, and Bernie and my wife Miki, who helped me with financial support.

Sometimes the dreams were above reality, and she stopped me from going on. I was dreaming and drawing of, and put them into my notebook and with my computer, I was playing around with 3D parametric modeling, I had my own taste of color and the feeling of beauty, from the nature, the flowers, the birds, the rustling of the water springs, or the swarms of honeybees. I brought them home, lived the dream of the whispering fountains, exotic pheasants, red and blue, fruits- hidden in the jungles of Hawaii and Amazon, the palm trees, the giant forests of bamboo, which rang out over the streams.

I have set up 5-m high cascades with many steps, which fell over the reeds and bamboo forests, fountains with the mustache lions, with their water silk faces worn out by the sun, which reminded me of the old monasteries from Europe, or from the coast of the Pacific Ocean. The histories with the wild jungles, fiery colors and the bees, the singing birds with the colorful and exotic feathers, fruit-out of the faraway islands, or lemons, with the hands of a witch… these images, broken from the stories may be seen in bits and small pieces on the pages of this book.

Along with the fulfillment of dreams and aspirations, they are also sad histories who came unexpected. The envy of the neighbors and the scorn of the bureaucrats, who tortured me, they are also true-and I have mentioned them briefly at the end of the book.

The chilly nights of December, the night hunters-gophers, they were also my enemies. The lack of water and the soil of clay in the garden, also they stopped me fulfilling my dreams. I was enthusiastic, I took a class at a community College-(the study of tropical plants), I've been to many conferences of the most skilled gardeners across America, CRFG (California Rare Fruit Growers), where we exchanged plants, fruits, nuts, thinking and tied friendships.

I've brought a couple of brush strokes, vibrant as fire, a few of my paintings, some drops of my soul from the garden of dreams… at the end, looking far away, I am watching with nostalgia, and compare it to the thoughts of Solomon, with the reality of today. What is coming after you? It's a fair question, which leaves every reader to give the answer.
